My mixing philosophy is to check out the source material and get a feel for the “core” of the song, if the multitrack is well recorded I tend to stick mostly inside the box using a lot of the UAD-2 plug-ins, but bussing out Drums and really important tracks like lead vocals to outboard gear. If an individual track needs some major work I’ll tend to print it through an analogue outboard chain to get some harmonics and vibe into it. You can see a pretty good summary of my approach in this interview here.
